why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice?
- I don’t chose to. I chose not to live with my parents. A day-job is needed to fulfill that choice.
does your “day job” effect your creativity?
- I do find that when I have more than two days off a week I run out of creative steam. Working 30-40 hours a week forces me to make use of what time I have outside of the work place to get done what I wanna’ get done. I wouldn’t say the action of working the job makes me any more or less creative.
what was your last meal?
-Oatmeal
If you could trade places with one living human/ animal for a day who and why would it be?
-I’d like to be my dad for a day just to make sure he doesn’t have any regrets, and if he does I’d fix that for him.
What would your “dream” life consist of?
- Living off the label or one of the bands I’m in.

why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice?
~i actually was doing secretarial and administrative work way before i accepted that i was an artist. i actually ignored that part of me all the way through college and did the safe route. about 6 years ago i picked up a camera and everything changed. i am working my menial job now to make sure i keep the lights on and the fridge especially during the colder months here in va.
does your “day job” effect your creativity?
~ it effects in when the day is absolutely perfect outside and i would much rather be out doing shoots or at a coffee shop working on edits. :) in all seriousness though having the “day job” does make it possible for me to afford gear and the bigger trips to weddings and portrait shoots up and down the state.
what was your last meal?
~the last meal i will count was homemade shrimp and grits.. actually that sounds like an excellent meal for tonight too… hmmm :)
two artists that you look up to?
~ the cliche answer which is also the truth but most of the people in my life i look up to. i have been insanely blessed with some talented creative types who make me step my game up often in my photography and my writing. since the beginning though diane arbus and sally mann have inspired me in many many ways, the way they document life and tell stories with ordinary folks speaks to the reason why i got into photography the ability to tell someone’s story with an image.. or a billion :)
If you could trade places with one living human/ animal for a day who and why would it be?
~i think this is the hardest question to answer. i would love to trade places with annie lebowitz because of how she sees her subject and her craft. there is the whole she got a chance to travel and meet all these bands but she was able to strike this level of intimacy with them that is hard to come by in the medium these days. i would love the chance to brush elbows with so many incredibly talented musicians and celebrities would be pretty awesome as well.
What would your “dream” life consist of?
~ my dream life would consist of having a home in a city center and living fully off my work. i would have a place where various artists could come and create (dark room, studio(both art and photography), recording studio) and share life and inspiration with one another. i would also travel with with my family and share as many people’s stories as i could.

why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice? Oh, it’s a conscious choice. Kind of like being a super hero(heroine?)…I am part-time-sales-associate/nanny by day……….singer-songwriter extraordinaire by night. Plus, I kind of need money. Hate it, but need it.
does your “day job” effect your creativity? It really does. For a retail job, Anthro really does stimulate and inspire creativity. Everything you see or hear (awesome soundtracks) in that store is by definition art. Their visual displays are incredible! Also, the fashion is high-end, and the employee discount doesn’t hurt my artist image….As for nannying, well, the family I babysit has a piano in their home, so occasionally I’ll sit down and write/practice. But really, the kids I’m with bring me so much joy (and many, MANY hilarious stories), so that’s a great outlet for me.
what was your last meal? Ru San’s fried rice and miso soup - I’ve really been into tofu lately.
two artists that you look up to? Eva Cassidy and Joan Baez
If you could trade places with one living human/ animal for a day who and why would it be? Easy. The Australian Snares Island Penguin. I’d KILL for those eyebrows. Cool accent wouldn’t hurt either.

I am a Developmental Specialist for First Steps under the Tennessee Early Intervention Systems program. I work with varying degrees of a variety of developmental delays in children under 3 years of age. That incredibly long title and explanation just to say I’m a teacher and I get to play with babies all day.
What is your art medium?
I am a music composer. I am an extended range bass artist and I play (not solely) a 12 String Bass.

Why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice?
Every job that I have ever had has been a choice. The minute it becomes a real chore or the pros outweigh the cons is the minute I quit. I have always treated my “day jobs” like that. I choose to work this job and continue to excel in the field because babies are a trip and they make me laugh.
Does your “day job” affect your creativity?
In a sense it does. I have a very free form schedule that I get to make so I can schedule my days around shows and such but there is a lot of validity to the concept that a teachers’ day never ends. I still spend a minimum of 3 hours a day with my instrument in my hands so I really only tend to sacrifice my romantic relationships and my social life.
What was your last meal?
Donuts….
Who are two artists that you look up to?
I look up to all artists and appreciate them greatly for what their abilities to create. I am always amazed by true artistry. Other artists, regardless of their means, inspire me to improve and move past my current limitations.
The artists that I really look admire and respect, outside of my natural appreciation, are Chic Corea for his influence and abilities in the world of music and Dave Chappelle for his devotion to the craft that he loves over all of the other trappings of the world.
If you could trade places with one living human/ animal for a day who and why would it be?
I would trade places with the legendary giant squid. I am curious as to what they do all day. Also, cephalopods have the largest brains of any invertebrate and I am curious to see exactly how they would use it in a form that is not as adaptive, since the majority of the brain function is used to adapt to their environments for survival purposes.
What would your “dream” life consist of?
I will play to eat. I have no interest in getting famous or moving to Hollywood or winning a Grammy or dating models; I just want to make enough money to eat as much food as I want or need. Simple.

why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice? Yes, I choose to pay my bills… a little.
does your “day job” effect your creativity? Yes. For the better, it forces me to trudge through challenge and face the feelings of that challenge. It also gives me perspective outside of myself. I see into people and their challenges every day. For the worse, it demands most of my time and energy.

why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice? It’s only somewhat of a choice. I have to work a job to pay my rent and bills. I choose to work where I do instead of somewhere more terrible.
does your “day job” effect your creativity? Probably, but not necessarily in a negative way. I often get ideas for writing while I’m work; and I always keep a notebook near me so I can write when I get an idea.

why do you choose to work a menial job? Is it a choice?
I guess it is a choice.. i can easily feel stuck at times.. but i took this job because its money i can count on, and hours that are the same every week that i can schedule around. and I enjoy the people i work with, and it gives me a little accountability. Also, Its paying for the production of my first EP! So I can’t complain. They’ve also been really flexible when i need to be out of town, cause a lot of the folks that work here are or have been working musicians at one time or another.
does your “day job” effect your creativity?
You know, I hate that i have to sit here bored all day. That being said I’ve been able to bring my guitar to work with me, so when its slow and no one’s really around i can practice. That’s helped me get so much better. and, I get really neat opportunities to play here, like for the spiritual service on sunday mornings, or Sing and Share for the women’s program, or trading songs with a youth patient that plays music. There’s really not a negative aspect to this job, now that you made me list all these good things! haha
what was your last meal? lunch- veggie burger and fries. The food at work is WONDERFUL.
two artists that you look up to?
So many. I mean SO many. but this week I’m thinking and listening to a lot of
Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season- they made me realize that it was possible to do this whole music thing if i wanted to.
and Leslie Feist. have you seen. that lady. play the guitar. I’m equal parts jealous and inspired.
also- Patty Griffin, Kathy Mattea
If you could trade places with one living human/ animal for a day who and why would it be?
Oprah.
Just kiddin.
I would be Patty Griffin. or be myself and be best friends with her.
What would your “dream” life consist of?
Traveling, Playing music, and continuing to meet more and more amazing people like I am now. Have a little house somewhere with wood floors and big windows and a porch, My life is so rich because of this music i get to make and the music those around me make. When you meet someone else who plays music or creates in anyway, there’s this instant platform for connection with that person. It is such a gift. Oh, and just once I want to play the Ryman. preferably with emmy lou harris, Patty Griffin, and Kathy Mattea.. but by myself for an empty room would be okay too.
